Different types of Tax Attorneys and their salaries

They are experts who deal with the IRS related issues on behalf of their client. They are well versed in handling the modalities of the case and building a proper defense argument on behalf of the client. Many a times it is beneficial for individuals to handle cases on their own. Attorneys come only at a cost and it varies depending upon the nature of problem. They do not carry emotional attachment to the issues unlike individuals and hence are in a position to deal the case in a better frame of mind.

There are basically three types of tax experts dealing with tax issues. They are as follows:

  • Enrolled Agent: An individual who is a tax preparer and an advisor licensed to practice before the IRS is an Enrolled Agent. They are both least expensive and best people to deal with the issues relating to IRS. They are experienced professionals.
  • Tax Attorney: These attorneys are lawyers who help in deal with the technical and complex tax related queries and problems. They are a good choice where huge amounts of money is involved, both in cases where you approach the court for tax related issues or the IRS has accused you of a fraud.
  • Certified Public Accountants(CPA): Dealing mainly with accounting and auditing related issues, they are state licensed tax professionals who help in resolving tax related issues.

Tax Attorneys and their salaries

  • Tax professionals have a varied source of income; either they are into private practice, consultancy or work for an organization.
  • Newly passed out graduates earn $60,000 on an overall basis. Those in government services earn $40,000p.a, $85,000 is the annul income earned by those in private practice and $55,000 by those in business.
  • Median tax attorneys earned around $100,000p.a.
  • Tax attorney at level IV can expect around $150,000 p.a.
  • Factors affecting the salary earned are type, size and location of the client.
